What Our Kids Need Today

Yesterday, our country saw another first. Our country saw people who not only crossed the lines of the law, of decency and normalcy, but also blatantly defied the role free people play in a democratic republic.

For hours yesterday, mob mentality wasn’t the exception in our nation’s capital, but the rule.

Order has been restored, but the scars of yesterday won’t fade fast.

Today, our kids need normalcy and a place where the chaos of yesterday isn’t at the forefront of their learning.

But also today, your kids might ask you to help them process the events of the last 24 hours. The thing is, they might not know how to ask for help, they may say, “did you see that guy hanging off the wall yesterday?” or “did you hear about that lady that got shot?”

Here’s the thing - you have to be willing to help them process what they saw yesterday, but you also have to do it as a person who sees students as what they are, children. So often you will hear the voice of a parent in the words of a child; and those words can smack of ignorance and intolerance.

We all have chosen a profession where we combat ignorance; where we shine a light on the truth and lead our kids on the path we hope leads to that truth. We don’t do it through vilification or minimizing their ideas, but we never abandon that path towards truth and enlightenment.

Today, we have the chance to be the spark that lights the minds of our kids and can move them closer to the truth and farther from ignorance. Be that spark. That’s what kids will remember, and that’s how we change our world one moment at a time.
